US Olympian Shani David Furious That He Wasn’t Chosen As Flag-Bearer Because He’s Black

Some people try to make everything about race. The Winter Olympics is starting this week in Peyongchang, South Korea and a white woman, Luger Erin Hamlin was chosen to carry the U.S. flag during the opening ceremony over a black man, Shani Davis. This was determined by a coin toss, but according to Davis, he wasn’t chosen because he was black

“I am an American and when I won the 1000m in 2010 I became the first American to 2-peat in that event. @TeamUSA dishonorably tossed a coin to decide its 2018 flag bearer. No problem. I can wait until 2022. #BlackHistoryMonth2018 #PyeongChang2018,” tweeted Davis. For some reason he felt like Black History Month was relevant.

Hamlin and Davis were among 8 nominees for the flag bearer role. But Davis feels he should have won because he is black. Fortunately, not everyone is as miserable as Davis.

Hamlin shared her joy. In an interview, Hamlin shared a story about how her parents always wrestle with the decision over whether they want to spend money for the high-priced tickets to the opening ceremony.

“I think they’re going to be really glad that they made that decision. They’re really pumped. I’m sure my brothers will be. We’ve grown up watching the Olympics and we’re always like, ‘Who’s going to be carrying the flag?’ And to actually be that person is insane,” said Hamlin.
