Jane Fonda tells Colin Kaepernick: “Keep kneeling until you can stand”

“Hanoi Jane” is back at it again. Actress Jane Fonda praised NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick at an awards gala on Sunday, telling him to “keep kneeling until you can stand.”

Fonda: “You are woke!”

The quarterback-activist appeared at an awards gala in Beverly Hills hosted by the ACLU of Southern California on Sunday. Kaepernick received an award for his stadium activism at the annual Bill of Rights gala, alongside Fonda and a host of activists including director Judd Apatow.

Martin Sheen presented Fonda with the Ramon Ripston Liberty, Justice & Equality Award. Using social justice lingo to describe a person who is conscious of systemic oppression, Fonda heaped praises on Kaepernick.

“Colin, you are woke!” she began her speech. She ended by telling him to “Keep kneeling until you can stand up.” Is there anything worse than an elderly limousine-liberal using the term ‘woke?’

A star-studded affair

The ritzy gala was attended by a bevy of celebrities who fawned over Kaepernick for his ‘protests’. Kaepernick’s kneeling routine created shockwaves in the NFL, which is now suffering record low attendance rates at games. “He’s been viciously and unfairly criticized,” said ACLU Southern California’s executive director Hector Villagra.

The Hollywood Reporter published Villagra’s comments:

“He’s been called a traitor because too many people in this country confuse dissent for disloyalty. He took a stand knowing some would threaten him and he has had his life threatened, which is why we are profoundly honored to have him here [and] we didn’t publicize his presence tonight,” he added.

Kaepernick delivered a speech in which he compared “systematic oppression” to a “disease” that can only be healed by “doctor” activists. His attendance, which was not announced before he arrived, was met with thunderous applause.

“We all have an obligation no matter the risk, and regardless of reward, to stand up for our fellow men and women who are being oppressed with the understanding that human rights cannot be comprised,” Kaepernick said, receiving a standing ovation.

Kaepernick opted out of his contract with the San Francisco 49ers when the 2016 season ended. He has not been taken up by another team since.

“He took a stand knowing he would risk his job, and he has lost his job; one that he loved and was supremely talented and skilled at,” ACLU SoCal Executive Director Hector Villagra said.

Two of a kind

Fonda is no stranger to controversy herself. The “Barbarella” star earned herself the nickname ‘Hanoi Jane’ in the 1970’s due to an infamous photo depicting her sitting atop an anti-aircraft gun in Vietnam.

Fonda, an outspoken critic of the Vietnam War, was roundly condemned for the insensitive picture.
